Review of December 2009 Minutes
3. Review of Action Items from Previous Meetings (a) How To Get A New Streetlight: Jim reported that he had tracked down who to contact. He indicated that Paula (or anyone else wanting a new streetlight installed) should contact Officer Katrina Neal, who knows the procedures. Also, apparently a new streetlight was already requested for Paula’s street during the NEP, and Katrina will be able to ascertain the status. (b) Schedule for 2010 Meetings: Location for the April meeting is still open, location for the August meetings still needs to be confirmed. (c) Habitat for Humanity Rep to Summit: Ron will endeavor to contact Habitat and invite them to the next Summit meeting. Habitat is rumored to have purchased 3 properties on Homeside. The local director, Tom Salsbrin, lives in College Hill. (d) Youth Action List: No one had sent Ron & Valerie any information since the previous meeting. It was requested that everyone do so for the next meeting.
4. COP/CPOP/CourtWatch/CPD – by Jim Bodmer & Officer Jason Penchiney Jim reported that good progress is being made by CPOP in their focus on youth. They have received lots of good ideas from Aiken on how to reach out to the youth hanging out on the Avenue. Current best ideas being developed are basketball leagues and a Wii tournament. The Forum may purchase 2-3 Wii’s for this effort. Ron Whitt has found Wii tournaments are very attractive to youth. Court Watch is continuing, with Tom and Amos going to court about 3 days per week. Officer Lisa Johnson has been focused on Hillrise. She is working with the managers, talking to the residents daily, and will probably set up a desk there. The College Hill camera system is up and operating. It has been very helpful already, with criminal activity caught on camera. The December crime stats were briefly reviewed. Overall crime is down 6% in College Hill for 2009. Property crimes (burglary, auto theft, etc) is up slightly, in keeping with trends across the city and nation.
5. Housing Team Update – by Hope Wilson Hope handed out a flyer for the next WIN Homebuyer Training Classes for the year. The first classes in February will be Feb 2, 9, & 16. All classes are help at the WIN offices from 6 pm to 9 pm. The new house at 402 Cedar is almost finished. It will have 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths. The rehab of 5918 Lantana will start in February. Rehab plans for 1192 Cedar and 1309 Cedar are going out for bid at the end of January.
6. CHBA Update No one was present from CHBA to give an update. The Annual Dinner is expected to be the 3rd Wednesday in April.
7. CHCURC Update – by Pete Bauer · CHCURC’s annual meeting will be Feb 3. It will be held upstairs at Marty’s Hops & Vines. · A new business is coming to the old car wash property on Hamilton Avenue: The Avenue Iron Works, which is an art gallery and light foundry. · CHCURC did receive CNBD money of $305,000 to acquire the old Saba building, and demolish it. · NSP funding has been cut from $7000 per year to $5000 for 2010. This decrease will affect various events. The Neighborhood Business District funding was cut from $10,000 to $2,000. These funds cover the extra police details, marketing of the business district, and Christmas decorations, so it is unclear at this point how these things will proceed. · The Gateway element is now being manufactured.
8. College Hill Schools Updates Aiken High School – Karen Barrett Aiken is currently in the process of recruiting 8th graders for the fall of 2010. To help with this, Aiken has put together a “road show”, which includes a rented full-sized Trailways bus, the Aiken band, a presentation by Principal Thomas, talks by current students, and a DVD. 8th graders come and visit as well. The effort has been very successful. Aiken is naming their athletes of the week. Aiken is looing into having Wii tournaments. Aiken is planning to do something to benefit Haiti. CHBA has donated money for the “caught being good” program. The most popular items are chips & pop, spiral notebooks, and flash drives.
McAuley High School – by Cheryl Sucher McAuley is also focused on recruitment. There is a banquet tonight (Jan 14) as part of this process. McAuley is currently running volleyball tournaments, which run from December through February on weekends. The tournaments are for elementary girls in grades 3 through 8. This program is both a good fund raiser and recruitment technique. McAuley has added a 3rd school play this year. It is “Cheaper by the Dozen” and will be performed on January 29, 30, and 31. Tickets are $6. There will be a spaghetti dinner on Feb 21, from 4 to 7 pm. The McAuley vocal ensemble, an award winning group, will perform every half hour. The tickets are $7 at the door. Dinner consists of spaghetti, salad, and dessert.
Pleasant Hill Academy – Ron Cowill via written report from Paula Sherman Principal Cherese Clark had unexpected heart surgery this month, and is expected to return to work within the next 2-3 months. In the meantime, Mrs. Marty Dupree Gibson will be the interim Principal. The school remains focused on their goal to reach AYP (Average Yearly Performance) and get out of academic emergency. Tutors and volunteers are still needed to work with many students who are very close to passing the OAT. Anyone who has the capability to tutor in math or language arts should contact Paula at 363-4366. Tutors only need to spend about an hour per tutoring session, during school hours. Both the girls and boys basketball teams are strong tournament contenders. The boys team is currently 6 and 1, while the girls team is 4 and 3. School spirits are very high in support of these teams. Whiz Kids is continuing with lots of success. Thanks to Missy and Ron Whitt for all their support and hard work. Paula also wants to thank the following businesses and organizations for all their support during the holidays: LaRosa’s, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital College Hill Campus, College Hill Coffee Company, Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy, College Hill Presbyterian Church, Goodies Restaurant, and the Cincinnati Black Theatre Company.
9. Library Update No one was at the meeting to give an update.
10. Children’s Hospital Update No one was at the meeting to give an update.
11. College Hill Recreation Center No one was at the meeting to give an update.
12. Ministerium Update – by Rev. Dan Weyand-Geise (a) The annual Martin Luther King service will be this Sunday (Jan 17) at the House of Joy. There will be a walk at 4 pm from the corner of Hamilton & North Bend (the old Shuler’s property) to the House of Joy. The service will include liturgical dancers, and an artist during the service. Dave Hawkins is providing the music. Rev Paula Jackson is preaching. (b) The first weeks of the Interfaith Hospitality Network are going well. There has been great participation from the churches and lots of support from Llanfair. St. Clare Church donated a Wii for a week, which was really appreciated by the kids. (c) Last year, the Ministerium was asked for help in addressing race relations in the community, especially with the businesses. An expert facilitator will be participating. Two groups have been identified in the community: those who are connected and participating, and those who are not connected and not participating. These two groups will meet separately with facilitators as a first step. Next steps will be determined after these meetings.
13. Christ’s Community in College Hill – by Ralph Williams Ralph is the new director of CCCH. He gave some personal background. He moved to College Hill in 1968 and attended Aiken High School, graduating in 1979. He played football for UC and Miami, eventually turning pro and playing for the Green Bay Packers. He worked with Rev Strayhorn at CCCH for many years. He is happy to be back in College Hill.
14. Discussion Topic: What should our discussion topics be for 2010? Ron asked for ideas regarding discussion topics, and the input included the following: - Need a marketing strategy/public relations strategy for College Hill. Need a better image to match the positive reality of the community. - Let’s restart the “College Hill Days” carnival that used to be held once/yr. Dan suggested that the idea be brought to the Ministerium. Other considerations brought up included tying into the annual Block party and the possible high cost of insurance. Perhaps this could be planned as part of the upcoming bicentennial. Anyone interested in working on it should contact Ralph Williams. - Need to find a way to help people get jobs. Need some kind of infrastructure to facilitate this. - Need to develop the Community Calendar much more in advance to enable better coordination and avoid conflicting schedules. It would be natural for Summit to do this. Can we do this for 2010 at the February meeting? - WIN can give their annual report on foreclosures after they finish it in March. - Would be interesting to talk more fully about “Whatever It Takes”, the initiative now ongoing in Harlem (New York) to make a positive intervention in the lives of African-American youth. Could be part of the ongoing discussions about youth in the College Hill community. - Perhaps some topics deserve discussion more than once/year.
15. Community Activities and Announcements Ø Annual Community Potluck Supper will be Feb 12 at CHPC.
