Dear Reader,

Here's yet another edition of news about your favorite community. If you know of news that would be interesting to your neighbors, let the editor know. We're especially interested in stories about people and organizations who are working to make our community even better.

  • Follow-up to Media Coverage of College Hill Robberies on Tuesday, July 19
  • The media covered a number of aggravated robberies in College Hill, Northside and Clifton that occurred during the late evening of July 19 and the early morning of July 20. Four robberies were attributed to College Hill, but there were actually three, all occuring between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM. One, the robbery of a Papa John's pizza delivery person, occurred in the 1300 block of Cedar Avenue; the other two robberies occurred in the College Hill Presbyterian Church parking lot. The victims gave a general description of the four youths involved.

On Wednesday, the day after the robberies, our District Five police were out in force. Working together, College Hill Citizens on Patrol, District Five police and Neighborhood Officer Herb Noble identified a 14-year-old suspect, who was then arrested within twenty-four hours of the robbery. It turned out that he used a BB gun, not a shotgun as was reported by the media. Soon after, two other youths were arrested. The fourth suspect, an 18 year old, was apprehended the next day.

This is an example of the strong police-community relationship in College Hill. College Hill Citizens on Patrol (COP) volunteers continuously monitor the neighborhood for crime and disorder, acting as eyes and ears for the police. The College Hill Community Problem Oriented Police (CPOP) Team analyzes and plans strategies to deal with crime in the neighborhood.

We encourage all College Hill residents to join us in providing information about criminal activity on your street so that College Hill continues to be a safe community. For information on being involved with Citizens on Patrol and/or Community Problem Oriented Policing in College Hill, please call 513-542-7263 and leave your name and phone number. A member will return your call and answer any questions you may have.

  • New Kindergarten Option for College Hill
  • St. Clare school will not offer kindergarten for the 2005-06 school year. Instead, in a joint project between St. Clare Roman Catholic Church and the College Hill Presbyterian Church, kindergarten will now be offered as part of the popular 3Cs nursery school program at CHPC. The new kindergarten will use the St. Clare curriculum, but be taught in CHPC classrooms. This will be a half-day afternoon program.

Wednesday night @ 6:00 PM at the College Hill Block Party the kindergarten teacher will be meeting interested parents (and children). It's opportunity to have questions answered, learn about curriculum and other details. Pizza will be served. The meeting will be in College Hill Presybterian Church.

Contact Jenny Smith, the director of 3Cs, at 513-853-8489, for more information.

  • St. Clare School Restructures
  • For the 2005-06 school year, St. Clare school will switch to multi-age classrooms. Staff have already had training sessions from an expert in multi-age classrooms, and will have several more before the school year starts. St. Clare offers instruction for grades 1-8. Its student body is diverse racially and economically. Non-Catholics are welcome. Enrollment is open now. The restructuring is due to changes in elementary schools throughout the Archdiocese.
