Citizens Police Academy Begins New Class on September 7

What is this Citizens Police Academy Class? College Hill resident Phyllis Schoenberger says, "It's informative, interesting and never boring, with some hands-on fun weaponry training. It's a chance to ask the questions you have always wanted to know." Among the questions that will be answered: Why and when is certain "use of force" used? Why can't a policeman shoot a gun out of the hand of a suspect? What is the difference between what you see on the CSI TV show and reality? What is CPOP and how does it work? Arrangements can be made to ride along with an officer for an up-close and personal view of their job and how they handle situations.

The class meets one evening per week for eight weeks starting September 7. The course is sponsored by the Cincinnati Police Department and is an effort to increase awareness, understanding and foster a good relationship between citizens and the CPD. There is no charge to participate, however registration is required. There is no commitment required after completing the class. For more information or to enroll please call Monica Ervin at 513-357-7554.

Solidarity Not Just a Word at McAuley

The first semester of the upcoming school year at McAuley High School is dedicated to the Catholic social teaching theme of “Solidarity”. Several McAuley students and teachers lived this theme of solidarity through experiences this summer.

Mr. Greg Niehaus, McAuley teacher, spent June 26-July 1 on an urban plunge retreat known as TACKLE (Teens Advocating Change through Knowledge, Leadership and Experience), examining issues of the impoverished and homeless in the Over-the-Rhine area of Cincinnati. With Mr. Niehaus were 15 TACKLE staff members and McAuley alumnae and students. Mr. Niehaus then spent July 7-18 on a mission trip sponsored by the Franciscan Network to explore the plight of the landless in Brazil with 22 participants. Earlier in June, 19 students and three teachers from McAuley and LaSalle volunteered for a week at the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida. Also in June, McAuley teacher Kay Sanker and alumna Jamie Reindl ’97 took a group of ten McAuley students to Honduras on another McAuley/LaSalle mission trip.
