College Hill Logo

The eNewsletter is published every week or two by the volunteers listed below. Our purpose is to help make College Hill an even better place to live, play and do business by publishing a broad spectrum of news for and about College Hill, with an emphasis on stories of College Hill people working together to improve our community.

Opinions expressed in the eNewsletter are not necessarily those of any College Hill or other organization--or even of the editor. The inclusion of an article is not necessarily an endorsement. The fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not necessarily a lack of endorsement--it's most likely because no one told us about it.

Send us interesting tidbits--anything that you think would be interesting to your College Hill neighbors-- and we'll very likely publish them.

Pleasant Hill Academy Asks for Help from the Community
Pleasant Hill Academy

Lead Teacher Julie Kent of Pleasant Hill Academy asks us to "Join us in making Pleasant Hill Academy a showplace for the College Hill Community."

She goes on, "Pleasant Hill Academy staff is committed to improving the academics, the school culture and the community relationships this year. We need your help to make this a successful endeavor. Some of our students are in need of individual tutoring in reading and/or math. The most effective approach for these students is a daily half hour of instruction. If we have a number of tutors who can work together (each person having a day over the period of each week), we will be able to meet the needs of these students. This could be during the school day or after school and is a sure way to increase the probability of passing the OAT.

"We could also use help monitoring the playground and the cafeteria during lunch time. Adults who have talents or specific knowledge (i.e. photography, drama, art, sewing, languages, chess, other games, tennis, golf) could start after school classes or clubs. These could be short sessions (a couple of weeks) to a weekly all year club or class. Adults are needed to help with field trips, to run a store for student rewards and a slew of other things."

For more information or to volunteer contact Julie Kent (KentJu@cpsboe.k12.oh.us) or Tia Yisrael (513-363-4342, Yisreat@cpsboe.k12.oh.us).

Pearce’s Auto Care Featured in Enquirer Article
Pearce's Auto Care

In an Enquirer article, writer Mike Boyer says, "Pearce's Auto Care in College Hill is one of the last of a dying breed. The auto repair/service station has been a fixture at Hamilton and Marlowe avenues for 70 years.

"Hank Pearce, who bought the service station from his father, Harry, in 1984, says it's the oldest business in the College Hill area with the passing several years ago of Shuller's Wigwam down the street."

St. Clair Presents Evening for Excellence
A Night with the Stars

October 28th is this year’s date for St. Clare’s Evening for Excellence. Event chairperson Ken Straub invites everyone to “join us for an elegant evening of live entertainment, food, prizes and fun. Socialize with neighbors and make new friends while you support the parish and our community.”

The theme for this year's event is "A Night With the Stars." Guests will be welcomed by searchlights, a red carpet and a theater marquee that will create the feel of the Academy Awards. Hollywood look-a- likes will mingle with the crowd and perform on stage. Attendees will enjoy an elegant meal. The "Impact Band" will perform and a Silent Auction, Reverse Raffle, and lots of other fun opportunities will round out the evening’s activities.

This event will be the first major event in St. Clare’s New Parish Center. The Evening for Excellence is St. Clare's major fundraiser for the year. www.theevening.org

Art Sale Benefits Feast of Love
Art Sale

The first ever Feast of Love Art Sale at the College Hill Presbyterian Church recently raised about $1800 for the inter-church ministry that serves holiday dinners to College Hill residents and shut-ins around the city.

More than 135 artworks were donated by the congregation. Some were original pieces by church members, including prints and paintings by artist and teacher Bob Cload, a College Hill resident. Others artworks included prints, paintings, and framed posters in many styles. Several pieces of fine and antique furniture were also for sale.

Feast of Love director Karen Lane began collecting the works more than a year ago, when some prints were donated to the Find A Need and Fill It ministry, which furnishes apartments and homes for low-income people. She thought that selling the prints might do more for the ministries than giving them away.

Response from visitors was enthusiastic. "Everyone was in awe!" Karen says of the two-day art sale. "It was a very nice setup, and we'll be back next year!"

To donate artworks for next year's sale, or money to buy food for the Feast of Love, or household goods for Find a Need and Fill It, call the College Hill Presbyterian Church at 513-541-5676 to make arrangements--or see if your church participates in any of these ministries.

Couples Celebrate Landmark Anniversaries
Anniversary Couples

Fourteen couples celebrating landmark wedding anniversaries were honored at St. Clare Church recently. Couples celebrating their twenty-fifth, fiftieth, and sixtieth anniversaries stood in the Sanctuary for the parish's annual blessing and renewal of marriage vows.

"A little louder, please," Fr. George Jacquemin, Pastor of St. Clare, urged the men during the renewal of vows. Families and friends laughed, and then clapped after the final blessing: "May the Lord in all goodness strengthen this consent given years ago and renewed today; and may God fill you with his blessings--for what God has joined, no one may divide."

The couples pictured with Fr. George are among these honored: Sixtieth Anniversary: Bill and Jeanne Ehlers, Joseph and Marsha Kelsey, Frank and Aileen Motz, Paul and Stella Tertinsky. Fiftieth Anniversary: Nicholas and Anna Marie Erndt, Werner and Walburga Kessling, Mario and Maria Marsan, Al and Jeanne Masset, Albert and Edna Roth. Silver Anniversary: Jeff and Janice Dovel, Paul and Lynn Kleusener Stu and Mary Lou Morrison, Kevin and Janice Redmond, Gregg and Wanda Roll.

McAuley Welcomes Exchange Students
McAuley Exchange Students

McAuley High School has been hosting foreign exchange students annually for many years. This year, McAuley welcomes two sixteen-year-old young women to spend the entire school year at McAuley.

She wanted to come the to the United States to improve her English. She shares that one of the biggest differences in McAuley and her school in Brazil is that at McAuley she changes classes and classrooms frequently; whereas, in Brazil, she stayed in one classroom all day. Mayra has been enjoying making many friends at McAuley, school dances, and football games. She wants to become a brain surgeon in the future.
